Abstract

From apparent stability to peaceful revolution. New books about the Soviet Occupation Zone and the German Democratic Republic
Is it really true that a historiography of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) can only assert itself in the future if it is embedded in a broader post-war historiography? The discussion about this fundamental question is still going on. Against this background the article surveys recent literature on the history of the Soviet Occupation Zone and the GDR. During the last years the historiography of the GDR has chosen multiple perspectives. In this article synthetic descriptions are discussed first. Secondly, books are presented concerning the GDR as an independent field of study. Thirdly, the article aims to explore the place of the GDR in the context of the history of divided Germany as well as ist historiography from an eastern European perspective. Finally, books are introduced about the collapse of the GDR and the unification of Germany 1989/1990.
