Susanne Schattenberg: Von ChruÅ¡čev zu Gorbačev – Die Sowjetunion zwischen Reform und Zusammenbruch

Abstract

Research on contemporary Soviet/Russian history, from 1953 onwards, has increased significantly in the last five years shedding new light on both the Chrushchev and Brezhnev era. First attempts to historicise the Gorbachev period are being made too. Given that it remains difficult to gain access to archival material, many of these new studies focus on collecting and presenting data in the first place. But some draw on new methodological approaches such as discourse analysis and speech act theory. Chrushchev’s frequently invoked zigzag course and the figure of Brezhnev as a weak leader are being called into question. Recent work on the Gorbachev era demonstrates that a network-analysis of the  perestroika movement paints a more comprehensive picture of transformation, one that encompasses both the dynamic process and its actoragents in a single explanatory framework. Other studies develop a critique of the Soviet regime while drawing on the concept of performativity. In  so doing, they interrogate outdated dichotomies, for instance being critical vs. loyal towards the regime. Finally, this essay considers work that has been done on the conservative movement and patterns of consumption.
