Abstract

The Man in the Glass-box. New Publications on the Eichmann-trial

The trial against Adolf Eichmann, which was opened in Jerusalem on 11th April 1961, can today be considered both as one of the most significant Nazi trials and as a symbol of recognition of the crimes committed against European Jews. The following article reviews recent research on the Eichmann trial which has been published to mark its 50th anniversary. It is worth taking a closer look at a number of biographical studies on Adolf Eichmann which add more complexity to our understanding of Eichmann as a person than Hannah Arendt offered in her early works. However, this article places recent research into a broader historical and judicial context by analyzing its impact on Israel and Germany and laying special emphasis on the significance of the trial for the international criminal law.
