Abstract

Work Between Subjectivation and Consumption. Current Debates  on the History of Work in the 20th Century

This article calls for a new look on the history of work in a ‚long 20th century‘. It reviews recent sociological studies on the subjectivation of work and the ‘new spirit of capitalism’ in the 1980s and 1990s, and contrasts their findings with historiographical debates on structural changes in the 1970s. By discussing research on work and industrial relations it questions influential claims that work has been replaced by consumption as central defining category for the analysis both of ‘post- industrial’ societies and ‘post-modern’ individuals. Inspired by the cultural turn and the trend to global perspectives, historians need to deal with continuities in the history of work and to overcome teleological narratives of the long rise of work and its abrupt fall at the end of the 20th century.
