Abstract

The Social Construction of Individual „Leistung“. Current Research Between Social Sciences and History
The article deals with the history of individual Leistung, a term that can be translated (among other options) as performance, achievement, accomplishment or effort. Discussing current research in the social sciences and history, the article suggests to treat individual Leistung as a highly powerful social construction and to link it to the history of the self in modern, German speaking Europe. Firstly, it sums up current debates on the impact of Leistung on the individual since the Enlightenment. Secondly, it addresses the history of the concept of individual Leistung, a term that developed its modern meaning and ubiquity only towards the end of the 19th century. Finally, it advocates scrutinizing social practices like competitions, exams, and tests that implant Leistung in everyday life.
