Abstract

New Perspectives on the History of Lighting Technologies and the NightThe introduction of public and private lighting systems in the late 19th and early 20th century have profoundly changed the socio-economic, cultural and physical realities of modern cities. This essay explores new developments in the historiography of lighting technologies and the night, e.g. with regards to the vulnerability and resilience of lighting infrastructures, conflicts and media discourses, lighting and nightlife, or the construction of public spaces. With these new emphases, the history of the illuminated night offers new perspectives to general historiographical discussions on globalization, the appropriation and shaping of the public sphere, or the effects of technological innovations.
