Abstract

Images as Sources and Criteria. Aesthetic Assumptions and Historical Contextualization
In recent years, aesthetic experience and the power of images seem to have gained significance within debates on images as historical sources. The article makes a case for the fact, that visual strategies can only be identified by means of comparative study. In this regard visual literacy is more important for the analysis of visual sources than a sophisticated theoretical framework. The latter has to be deduced from an intensive and extensive study of images in order not to miss or underestimate the range of profoundly different visual strategies. Finally, the images’ contexts such as their production and effects need to be analysed not by a single discipline but require interdisciplinary cooperation.
