Recent Research on the Nazi persecution of Sinti and Roma and their Stereotyping
Recent research on the Nazi persecution of Sinti and Roma and its aftermath has broadened our knowledge about the genocide, the continued discrimination after 1945, and the delayed compensation of this victim group in Germany. Studies on the stereotyping of the minority by the majority society are a second important research topic. Those focussing on the persistence and the impact of ‚Zigeuner’ stereotypes in photography and literature have benefited substantially from new studies of Antiziganism. Against the background of the long-lasting dominance of the ‚Zigeunerforschung’ in Germany, these new studies represent a paradigm shift that was initiated by the Sinti und Roma’s Civil Rights Movement in the 1980s.
