Abstract
“Help for Self-help” as (Anti)-History. German Development Aid in Post-Colonial Africa
The recent upsurge of studies on the history of planned development in Africa can be described as an effort to recapture the historicity of its discourses and practices, against their ‘anti-historical’, normative claim to replace existing processes by a better future. This effort is well illustrated by Hubertus Büschel’s study on the “Help for Self-help” concept, flourishing in development aid for Africa in both Germanies, 1960–1975. The article addresses major points of discussion, e.g. if inherent contradictions and colonial legacies of ‘help for self-help’ are overemphasized in ‘development history’. It advocates for this field an interest in the interactive and open-ended production of ‘future’.
