Abstract

Heterogeneous Feelings. Contributions to the History of Emotions
Based on representative studies in the field of history of emotions, the article gives an outline on the
recent developments, emphases, outcomes and difficulties regarding this research area. Emphasis
lays on the question on how to define an emotion and on historical developments of the idea of physical
embodiment in demarcation from spiritual localization of emotions. Subsequently, attention is drawn
towards singular examined feelings and the emotional outline of different social groups. Finally, the
article problematizes the difficulty to translate experienced emotions into language and metaphor and
closes with the perspective of an emerging master narrative following this historiographical approach.
