Right-Wing Extremism Research Reloaded: New Insights, New Research Topics and Old
Research Goals
Radical and extremist right-wing politics are a phenomenon of modernity, and can be understood as
a countermovement within the historical process of democratisation. European countries have seen
a strengthening of movements and organizations situated in the radical and extremist right. Those
movements have already threaten the consolidation of democracies in the transforming societies and
represent an autocratic reverse wave to democratisation processes. They represent a real test of
each political society’s democratic qualities. The article will introduce the latest insights and topics in
recent German-language research, while also considering the potential threat to democracy. Here,
the analysis will highlight the key role played by the “secular religion” of neoliberalism.
