Abstract
Diplomacy as a Focal Point for Global History
The article gives an overview over recent innovative research in the field of diplomatic history
focusing on the impact diplomatic history has on global history and vice versa. Three tendencies
within new studies on diplomatic history can be identified: 1. Recent publications show a strong
tendency of combining practical orientation with an interdisciplinary approach 2. Recent research
critically investigates its own historiography. In doing so a linear history of progress within the field of
diplomacy is questioned. 3. A strong transnational research focus can also be identified within the
latest publications. By linking these findings to other innovative approaches the article demonstrates
the innovative core of a new diplomatic history that has developed in a global context.
