Abstract

The Persistence and Critique of Racism
This essay focuses on the political theory of Achille Mbembe, namely on the two books that followed his monograph “On the Postcolony”. The essay shows how a discourse of anti-black racism evolved with the rise of European colonialism, illustrates the ways in which such racial knowledge legitimized and structured colonial practices, makes claims about its links with modernity and argues that it lives on. Furthermore, it demonstrates the strengths of postcolonial theory to critically engage with this legacy, and argues in favour of a renewed humanism and the potentials of afropolitanism in this regard.
