Abstract

Approaching a Fleeting Subject. New Publications on the History of Music
This article reviews recent histories of music written by journalists, historians and musicologists. It
notices a dearth of scientific works that provide broader interpretations of popular music history, and
argues that this lack of general histories is compensated insufficiently by journalistic books which
appear to dominate the genre at present. Turning towards academic music histories, the article points
out that narratives of symbolic resistance and value change prevail, and shows that much research
rests on rather strong assumptions about music’s intrinsic potential to create communities. This leads
to questions about the nature of music, theories and methods for its study, and implications for new
music histories beyond the historiographical “mainstream”.
