Detlev Mares: Im Bachelor-Paradies. Studienbücher zur Geschichte des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts

Abstract

With the adoption of the Bachelor/Master-system into German higher education, a new generation of history textbooks has started to appear that claims to be tailor-made for the reorganised course structure at universities. The article surveys selected textbooks on 19th and 20th century history and argues that the publishers’ claims of innovation in the presentation of history are somewhat exaggerated. However, the surge in textbook production has resulted in substantial historical texts, which do not content themselves with offering factual knowledge, but frequently manage to integrate the results of historical and even conceptual discussions into the general argument.

The following titles were discussed i.a.:
Althammer, B.: Das Bismarckreich 1871-1890 (91); Budde, G.: Blütezeit des Bürgertums im langen 19. Jahrhundert (91); Jansen, C./Borggräfe, H.: Nation – Nationalität – Nationalismus (91);  Engehausen, F.: Die Revolution von 1848/49 (93);  Wendt, R.: Vom Kolonialismus zur Globalisierung (93); Wildt, M.: Geschichte des Nationalsozialismus (93); Altena, B./Van Lente, D.: Gesellschaftsgeschichte der Neuzeit 1750-1989 (94); Bauer, K.: Nationalsozialismus (94); Geisthövel, A.: Restauration und Vormärz 1815-1847 (96); Schäfer, M.: Geschichte des Bürgertums (99)
