Thomas McCarthy: Race, Empire, and the Idea of Human Development

Booksymposium with Contributions by Eduardo Mendieta, Charles W. Mills, David B. Ingram, and a Response by Thomas McCarthy

The papers here published were presented at an "Author Meets Critics" session Eduardo Mendieta, Stony Brooke University, organized on behalf of the programme committee of the American Philosophical Association for its 2010 Eastern Division meeting. With Charles W. Mills and David B. Ingram two prominent and prolific philosophers comment on Thomas McCarthy’s book.
"McCarthy’s project—carried out through an analysis of the developmentalist theory of modernity, and a correspondingly expansive survey and critique of macro-patterns of empire and global racialization—is the necessary rethinking of liberalism to take the history and current reality of race into account." (Charles W. Mills)
